Over the past 3 decades, the rhinoplasty has cemented itself as one of the most popular and widely requested aesthetic enhancement procedures around. Allowing men and women the opportunity to completely transform their facial aesthetic and create radically different facial contours – all from one procedure. As the top nose surgeon NYC has in practice, Dr. Richard Swift has performed countless rhinoplasty procedures throughout his time. Through his years of experience, Dr. Swift has been able to use the rhinoplasty to achieve some of the most radical facial transformations, providing results not a single plastic surgeon in New York can match. And while his skill, and knowledge have been able to make a huge difference, one of the most important aspects to any successful rhinoplasty lies in creating a smart and strategic aftercare program – allowing patients to maximize their healing and recover at an optimal rate. Depending upon the nose surgeon NYC patients can expect a relatively similar course of aftercare treatment, but over the years, Dr. Swift has heavily scrutinized the conventional recovery process and formulated his own specific set of guidelines for each and every patient and their individual needs! One thing many cosmetic surgeons fail to take into account is that every patient is different, and this makes every rhinoplasty procedure different as well. And certain factors, completely separate from the skill of the surgeon, will dictate how well your procedure goes. Some of these determining factors include:
· Body Chemistry & Overall Health
· Genetics
· Laxity of Skin
· Strength of Cartilage
· Underlying Shape & Structure of the Nose
· Age
· Patience & Willingness to Follow Guidelines
More so than any plastic surgeon in New York, Dr. Richard Swift provides a highly dedicated, hands-on approach to aftercare – a major reason why he is considered to the be top nose surgeon NYC has to offer. But before we get into the specifics of rhinoplasty aftercare, lets discuss what one can expect post-procedure. Patients must remember, that the rhinoplasty is quite a difficult procedure. While it might seem small, relative to other procedures, the procedure is performed on one of the most sensitive areas of the body, with not much extra tissue to go around – leaving an even smaller margin of error, no matter which plastic surgeon in New York performs the procedure. When the rhinoplasty is completed, patients can expect symptoms such as moderate pain and discomfort, bruising and swelling, excessive, often bloody, nasal discharge, numbness in the nose and upper mouth, excess mucus, loss of smelling and tasting, and one of the most annoying issues being severe nasal stuffiness. To combat these issues and allow the nose to heal with the proper shape & structure, your surgeon will use specially devised nasal packing, and strategically-placed splints. As the top nose surgeon NYC patients have come to trust, here are a few of Dr. Swift’s helpful tips for dealing with rhinoplasty aftercare.
· Blood Loss
Some patients will bleed a lot following their rhinoplasty procedure – causing bouts of severe nausea and dizziness. In order to combat this, Dr. Swift may recommend you take an antiemetic – a drug to deal with nausea and motion sickness. Also create a bit of a gauze reservoir to catch the blood that drips out of the nose. The bleeding will generally taper off within 24-72 hours following surgery, if it doesn’t, contact your doctor.
· Swelling
Swelling is a huge issue following a rhinoplasty, and depending on the person and the type of procedure they have – the swelling will gradually go down within 4-6 weeks of surgery. If correction is concentrated on the tip of the nose, then that area can remain swollen for several months, in many cases, lasting over a year! In order to reduce swelling, Dr. Swift will recommend a steroid taken immediately after surgery, as well as other anti-inflammatory supplements and medications. It is important to avoid too much head movement during this time, and keep your head as elevated as possible.
· Blowing Your Nose
Probably the most common question after a rhinoplasty, but it is important that patients avoid blowing their nose for at least the first 4 weeks after surgery. Depending upon your specific procedure, it may be okay to clean your nose out using a Q-tip and alcohol-based cleaning solutions.
In addition, Dr. Swift recommends avoiding eating large, or spicy foods that will cause you to open your mouth wide and put pressure on your nasal passages. Also you will be provided with a specially fitted splint to wear for the first week or two following surgery – in order to help maintain the new nasal structure.
