What Causes Gynecomastia?

While more and more men become comfortable with aesthetic enhancement surgery, Gynecomastia surgery has become one of the most common procedures around. In fact, while research indicates that more men than ever before are suffering from the condition, many experts feel it simply has to do with their growing comfortability with disclosing their issues – as in years past, men were far more reluctant to admit such an issue – or the need for any form of cosmetic surgery. But while gynecomastia treatment has become quite common amongst plastic surgeons like Dr. Richard Swift, many patients are still relatively unknowing of what causes this growth of “female breast tissue” in the first place.

One important thing to realize is that in general, gynecomastia occurs as a result of a hormonal imbalance in the body. Its vital that we understand that all humans have both male and female hormones to a certain extent. In males, regardless of age, gynecomastia occurs when male hormones (androgens) are relatively low compared to the level of female hormones (estrogens) in the body. This can transiently occur during normal development of boys, resulting in gynecomastia in infants or during puberty. In these cases, gynecomastia will usually be resolved on its own, as hormone levels return to normal during the latter stages of development.

Conditions that Cause Gynecomastia

However, in other cases, certain medical conditions, or even as a result of other medical treatment protocols – a hormonal imbalance might develop within the body – again, causing the development of excess female breast tissue – gynecomastia. Here are some of the most common medical conditions that can lead to the development of gynecomastia.

· Poor overall nutrition – hormones rely on a healthy, and balanced diet.

· Cirrhosis of the liver.

· Kidney failure, often chronic.

· Testicular disorders including infection, trauma, or inborn disorders.

· Aging.

· Testicular Cancer and certain anti-androgen treatments for issues like prostate cancer.

· Hyperthyroidism.

Medications and Other Substances

In addition to these medical conditions, a wide variety of medical treatments can actually cause issues with your hormones, as thus lead you to gynecomastia issues. Some of the most common drugs include, certain diuretics, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitor drugs to treat high blood pressure, retroviral drugs for HIV, and more. Certain skincare products including things like tea tree oil or lavender, are known to increase estrogen in men, and thus cause issues such as gynecomastia. And finally, the abuse or overuse of drugs and alcohol has also been known to cause gynecomastia.
